The Whitewater Canal Regional Interpretive Center

The Whitewater Canal Corridor Project is currently raising funds to purchase the MacLynn Campground located on US 52, Metamora, Indiana for the development of the Whitewater Canal Regional Interpretive Center.

The objective is to purchase, maintain and operate the 35 acre MacLynn Campground with its attendant buildings and facilities.  The buildings include an administration building and museum, the Depot Restaurant with banquet room, barn warehouse, camp shower and toilet building, 40 campsites with electric, water and picnic tables, large parking area.

The property has been up for sale by the owners for some time.  The asking price is approximately $1 million.  We have reason to believe we can obtain the property for less than the asking price.  To include closing costs and other indeterminables, we have set $1 million as our fundraising goal.  While we are raising funds, we are concurrently shaping and putting together our grant application for Federal intermodal transportation funds.  Representatives from other communities who have been awarded such funds are counseling us towards our own success.  With $1 million as our goal, Federal funds are hoped to amount to 80%.  This means we need to raise $200,000 to purchase a million dollar property that will benefit the immediate community and surrounding counties, distinguish Metamora's unique history and lore, and provide a more fulfilling experience for tourists and guests.

The Whitewater Canal Regional Project is made up of volunteers working together towards this $200,000 goal.  The idea began with the standing board of the Commissioner's Council on Historic Metamora, an initial configuration which is intended to lead Metamora's becoming incorporated as an official Indiana municipality.  Incidentally, the first public hearing on this subject was April 28, 2005, in the banquet room of the onsite restaurant.  At that time the project was endorsed by public vote of 50 yays and 2 nays.
