The Whitewater Canal Corridor Project under the Metamora Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) "I Believe" Campaign

What is the "I Believe" campaign?  Two years ago a group of Metamora residents and shop owners embarked on a grass-roots campaign titled "I Believe" in the hopes of reviving Indiana's hidden treasures. The Whitewater Canal Corridor is an important part of Indiana's Canal history and it need to be preserved and carried on for generations to come.  Metamora currently has the only working wooden aqueduct in the United States along with a working grist mill, a canal boat pulled by horses, rail transportation and over 115 historic buildings on the National Registry. Since the early 90's, tourist traffic has dropped by 80%.  Many shops have closed and many historic buildings cannot be maintained.

The purpose of "I Believe" is to develop an Interpretive Center which would provide tourist, schools and colleges information, education and history of the entire Whitewater Canal Corridors past.  The group has no intention of changing the old fashioned charm and feel of the region but would like to add to the region by providing visitors with an increased educational and historical experience.

"What will be at the Interpretive Center?  A museum would have displays and dioramas to educate visitors on canal life and history, including canal boat building, lock and dam operations, hydraulic power usage, and the railroad.

A visitors center will provide information about the counties along the length of the Whitewater Canal.

A conference room, lecture room, dining room and fully functional kitchen will be available for companies, wedding receptions, special events, large group meetings.

A gift shop with tourist with handcrafted works from area artisans.

A workshop and classroom will allow college classes to use this area for a class and field study lab.
